Marketing in Australia of Infant Formula
The World Health Organisation published the International
Code of Marketing Breastmilk Substitutes, Geneva 1981.
The aim of the Code is;
“To contribute to the provision of safe
and adequate nutrition for infants, by the protection and promotion
of breastfeeding, and by ensuring the proper use of breastmilk substitutes,
when these are necessary, on the basis of adequate information and
through appropriate marketing and distribution.”
In Australia, the Infant Formula Manufacturer's
Association (IFMA) members have a code of practice on the marketing
of breastmilk substitutes that supports the aim of the Geneva code.
This is called the Marketing in Australia of Infant Formulas : Manufacturers
and Importers Agreement (MAIF).
The MAIF Agreement is based on:
- The World Health Organization's International
Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (WHO Code)
- The Interpretation of the WHO Code in Australia
