It is important that your toddler receives all the essential nutrients and plenty of energy to play and grow.

Good nutrition
Healthy digestion

To ensure your toddler gets all the nutrients they need offer a well-balanced diet which includes foods from all the main food groups:
  • Fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen or canned are all good choices).
  • Breads and cereals (preferably wholemeal).
  • Lean meats and meat alternatives.
  • Dairy products (2 serves a day).

Your toddler also needs to have good intakes of iron, zinc and calcium:

  • Insufficient intake of iron can lead to poor growth and learning problems.
  • The best source of iron is red meat.
  • Cows' milk is not a good source of iron.
  • Other sources of iron (e.g. fortified cereals) are especially important for those who may not be meeting their iron needs. Toddlers who have a poor appetite or who are only offered vegetarian food choices may be vulnerable to iron deficiency.

  • Is essential for normal growth.
  • Helps build a strong immune system.
  • Good sources of zinc are meat and shellfish.
  • Toddlers may be particularly vulnerable to zinc deficiency, particularly those who are fussy eaters or have small appetites.

  • Iodine is an essential nutrient for everyone including babies and toddlers.
  • It is vital for normal growth and development.
  • Dietary intakes in Australia can be inadequate – it is found in seafood, shellfish, iodised salt and milk.

  • Toddlers and children need calcium to build strong bones and teeth.
  • Milk products are the best source of calcium.

The good bacteria in our gut play a very important role in helping us stay well through good digestion of nutrients and encouraging a healthy immune system. Probiotics (such as acidophilus and bifidus) and prebiotics work together to provide a healthy balance of bacteria in our gut.

  • Are "friendly" bacteria that are a normal part of our gut.
  • Encourage healthy digestion
  • Support natural defenses against harmful bacteria.
  • Are present in foods such as yoghurts and probiotic drinks.
  • Can be 'wiped out' in the gut by treatments such antibiotics.

The probiotics ‘acidophilus’ (Lactobacillus acidophilus) and Bifidus (BB12) are added to Heinz Nurture Gold Toddler® Milk.

  • Are part of food, usually a type of fibre
  • Help nourish the friendly Probiotic bacteria in the gut, boosting their growth

Inulin (a natural vegetable fibre) is a prebiotic added to Heinz Nurture Toddler® and Heinz Nurture Gold Toddler® Milk Drink.
